Quick back story. The journey…

Butterick B6554 before we get started let me share a quick back story. As you know (or may not know) that I am a huge lover of Spring / Summer sewing. During this season I just love to whip out my sewing machine and start making something beautiful, classy, professional, elegant, and creative. Because I don’t sew during the Fall Winter season. During Fall Winter season it’s a total different fabric, you know like that sweater thick type of materials etc.. and that my friend I have not mastered how to sew with yet. So during Fall Winter season I would just pack up my machine and sew nothing.

My sewing journey all started in 2015 taking various sewing classes locally here in GA with the goal in mind to sew for my eldest daughter (soon to be 13 as we type). She is a little person with Achondroplasia Dwarfism and since she was born I’ve struggled to find clothing to fit her. I would shop for her and every-single-thing I find, is just awfully way too big. We’ll find clothing in the stores for the big and tall but there is nothing in stores for the little and small.

I made it my mission to sew clothes for Little People for those diagnosed with the same syndrome, Achondroplasia Dwarfism. Well my little peanut butter is almost 13 now and she has ZERO interest in me continuing to sew clothing for her. Ugh.. She rather I buy clothes for her from the stores. Teenager!!! I would say I only was able to sew clothing for her for the first two years following my 2015 sewing journey. Since then, it’s been a lost mission on sewing for my daughter and other little people.

Although I’ve invested so much time and funds to learning how to sew now I just simply sew for myself at this point. Haha.. Cannot let all this education go to waste. Besides, I LOVE SEWING! It’s like therapy for me, literally. Fun hobby.

But ok, let me show you what i cooked up for this Spring / Summer 2020 Season.

Making the Butterick B6554 sewing pattern

I love all things wrap dress and I probably have over 20 different types I’ve personally sewn for myself in my closet. I just love the way it drapes against me. Making me feel so classy. And the flow that it gives. Ummmm… Love me some me! hahah.

So here’s the pattern envelope front. You will see Butterick B6554 offer 3 different styles to chose from. A. B. or C. I decided to make B. Yeehhaawww!!!

Fabric Choice from Walmart $1.00 Per Yard….SCORE!!!

On Friday, 04/17/20 I went to Walmart to grab some cotton fabric to make myself, kids, and hubby some masks. THEN!!! I seen this beauty LOL. It’s called: Various Blends Fabric Cotton/Polyester/Rayon/Nylon but it feels like a silk/satin drape. SEW ELEGANT!!!

Bought this fabric from Walmart $1.00 per yard so I grabbed the entire bolt which was 10yds and waited at the cutting counter for over 20 minutes. When a clerk finally came to cut the fabric he gave it to me for $7.75 total for the entire 10 yds.😲

He said (VERBATIM): “Since you waited for so long and you had patience here at the counter plus you were nice to me. I’m from Africa and not many people are nice to me. So I will mark this down for you. Thank you for being pleasant” WOW!!!

So homie wrote up my ticket for $7.75 for a total of 10yds at my local Walmart. Do the math: That means I only paid $0.80cents per yd? WOWOWOWOWO!!!! But why would folks not be nice to him just because he’s from Africa?! So silly!!

Got done treating the material. So much fabric I cannot even iron it on my board. I have to use the bed LOL.

My honest opinion of the Butterick 6554 Misses Wrap Dress Review

Pattern Description: Fitted wrap dress with length and sleeve variations.

Pattern Sizing: A5 sizes 6-14. I cut a size 12 however per pattern instructions for a bust 36, waist 34, hip 40 I should have cut 14. In this case, I didn’t cut 14 because I opted to go by the finish garment measurements instead which gave me a 12 for my actual measurement size. In stores this size sewing pattern would be 8-10-Medium. I wear medium 8-10 ready to wear from stores.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Absolutely.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, but I also followed a sew-along video tutorial created by the lovely Brittney J. Jones. There were some difficult parts of reading the pattern I was struggling with. GIRL, THANK YOU FOR THE TUTORIAL Brittney, YOU ROCK!!!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I LOVE the pattern. Easy to follow however there were some difficult parts of which I had to pivot over to Brittney Jones site for a walk-thru. Also, the bodice seems a bit small for me. I cut a 12 and I feel like next time I’ll cut a 14. Not sure yet. I like my clothings to fit me a bit roomy.

Fabric Used: Purchased my fabric from Walmart. Various Blends / Cotton / Polyester / Rayon/ Nylon. I bought it from my local walk-in store. Not sure if you’ll find this fabric online (I’ve searched extensively for you) but on their site just Search at Walmart for Various Blends / Cotton / Polyester / Rayon/ Nylon fabric. You’ll see tons of variety to select from.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Yes, the straps for the dress has one long and one short. Instead of cutting the straps out accordingly (a long strap and a short strap) I just decided to cut both pieces number 7 for the 2 long straps instead.

Also, for this dress making we should finish with baby hems. I didn’t do that. Takes too long and I really dislike hemming. So I opted to finish my hems with bias binding tape instead. For both the bottom of the dress and the sleeves.

Would you sew Butterick B6554 again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes and HELL YES! This is some SWAG sh!t right here. This dress took me one week to finish when normally something like this I would have easily sewn up in about 2-3 days. Due to a horrible car accident I was in during 2019 left me with massive pain and herniated discs in my neck and my back. ((( SIGHSSS ))).

Conclusion: Overall I really love the way my dress turned out. So freaking elegant and excited to wear it, eventually, once we’re off of lockdown.

  1. What an absolutely stunning dress, how good are you at sewing! I spent some time in my teens wanting to know more about sewing clothes, I remember making a few pieces.

    1. Hi Sarah, aw.. thanks so much!! Been sewing since 2015 and I can honestly say I am SEW addicted. haha. It’s definitely fun. Great hobby of mine (and therapy too).

  2. I had to laugh about your daughter not wanting you to sew for her. I agree, teenagers. 🙂 However, you did a fabulous job on the dress and the color and style looks fantastic on you!

  3. That is such a beautiful dress. I really love the color too. You did an amazing job. Looks really nice on you too.

  4. Gorgeous!! I do have a question though. The fabric looks sheer on the bolt, but not on the finished dress. Did you double up the fabric?

    1. Thanks so much Katie! What wonderful observation you have. But no I didn’t do any lining on this particular fabric. It’s kind of hard to tell in the pictures. This is some type of polyester but the fabric feels like a silk/satin type of material.

  5. I love this dress style along with the type of fabric you’ve chosen. It looks like a perfect choice on a hot summer day. Beautiful color choice, as well.

  6. My mom used to love to make things with these patterns. She had hundreds of them! This is gorgeous! You did an amazing job and I LOVE that color. It looks fabulous on you.

    1. Aww, that’s sweet Rena. LOL. I remember growing up seeing my mother and grandmother both with a TON of patterns and I had no clue what they were. Haha. So good to now know and do these things on our own as adults ourselves. Thank you for the compliment. I love the turn-out and looking forward to making more. Hugs.

  7. OMG this is gorgeous. Which part was hard to make? I am looking at this thinking it would be perfect for my oldest daughter. We just got the sewing machine out yesterday and made a pillow. But I would rather try a project that is bigger and more detailed like a dress.

    1. Heya Paula! Aww… thanks so much dear. CONGRATS on making that pillow. Garments is so much fun too. Definitely taking online classes for beginners. Yay!

    1. Aww, yes Rose it’s still a true that can ultimately come true for you. Always start with beginners classes. There is also online sewing classes or do a search for a offline sewing class in your local community. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

  12. Hi Janelle. I came across your site while searching for info on this pattern. I’m a 67 y.o. retired, Canadian Registered Nurse, who is an avid seamstress, sewing from the age of 6. You have done an amazing job creating this dress. I love the fabric you chose (wow, what a deal). You, & I obviously love fabric deals!
My eldest son (age 43) is finally getting married next May, 2023.
I’m already searching for my dress, & decided I have to make it, as I can’t find exactly what I want! This pattern fits the bill, & seeing your end result has helped me decide.
You are a beautiful, talented, young woman & I commend you for being a seamstress. It seems sewers are a ‘dying breed’. Please pass your abilities along to your daughter. She will thank you for it. Cheers & love from Canada. Be well. Stay safe.
